Book Review- Armageddon Now World War 3

Hello All,
I was recently given the chance to review a Graphic Novel called Armageddon Now World War 3, by Rob Liefeld and Phil Hotsenpiller. To be quite honest I am not impressed. 1. There is very little use of Bible. 2. It is much too bloody. 3. At least one female dresses in a VERY revealing outfit. This is totally unnecessary for a book that claims to be Christian. Yes, I am one of those old-fashioned Christians who sees no need to go to the world for our books. This is nothing more than a worldly comic book with a small amount of Christianity added to draw the worldly Christians and unsaved. I believe that someone who was unsaved could read and enjoy this without being affected at all by the use of some Bible verses thrown in. I am not sure what the goal of this Graphic Novel is, but it is not to reach the unsaved, and it definitely should not be what our Christian youth are reading. Why do we feel the need to be like the world to win the world and to keep our youth? I am going to have to give this book a thumbs down.

REDISCOVERING GOD IN AMERICA

I recently received the book Rediscovering God in America by Newt Gingrich, and featuring the photography of Callista Gingrich.

Book Description

Take a walk through Washington, DC with Newt and Callista Gingrich to view our nation's historic monuments and memorials. You will quickly find yourself on a profound and surprising walk of discovery and renewal.

Your first stop will be the National Archives, where Thomas Jefferson's immortal words from the Declaration of Independence that all "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," jump off the page with the inescapable truth that from day one in our country's history, the source of freedom was neither the state nor even the Founding Fathers.

This book is a New York Times Bestseller. It is hardcover and 118 pages long. The book takes you on a small tour of the US capital, Washington DC, visiting many of the monuments and institutions there. It covers how a belief that we are a Nation founded under God has affected our history, our documents, and our institutions.

I enjoyed this book. It was an interesting read. Seeing the many quotes from the Bible and just the statements in general by our historical leaders was enlightening. Many monuments and government buildings have plaques, paintings, stained glass windows, etc. that depict our countries early belief in God and our country being founded on these very ideas. The pictures of the monuments and buildings only added to this book and the information shared. It will also make you realize just how much our nation has changed and the efforts that are going on to remove God from our country. I did not care for the general view of every religion believing in God. Yes, the freedom to believe what you wish stands in America, but not all religions are Christian. Overall an interesting book regarding religion in America.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Women -Review and Giveaway

O. K. I will be the first to admit, this is probably not a book I would have chosen to read, but... Since I was given the chance to review the book and host a giveaway, I thought "Why not?" I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The book "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Women" written by Susan Heim and Karen Talcott contains 101 Daily devotions, to comfort, encourage and inspire. Now I will say up front that I wish they had used KJV for their Scripture quotations, but otherwise the devotions are good. Just little personal accounts to make you think. How different women handled different situations, and how they look back on them now.

This book covers topics such as Faith, Motherhood, Illness, Relationships, and Marriage just to name a few. There is room on each page if you wanted to write down some thoughts of your own. The stories are short enough you can grab one here and there without really interrupting your schedule.

"Throughout time, women have shared their joys and sorrows, thoughts and feelings, experiences and life lessons with one another. The tradition continues in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Women with 101 stories of friendship, faith, and comfort that affirm God's unconditional love and His wisdom. Women will find encouragement, solace, and strength in these personal stories and prayers that cover everyday trials to tests of faith, to marriage and parenting, to service to others and self-esteem."

Now here is the best part. I am able to giveaway a copy of this book. So we are going to have a giveaway. This giveaway will end December 25th at 11:59 CST. Please make sure you leave a valid email address so I can contact you if you win. Thanks.

JESUS LIVES by SARAH YOUNG

Jesus Lives by Sarah Young is a Devotional regarding Seeing His Love in Your Life. It has many themes that you may look up by subject such as, His Love, Grace, Joy, and Worry to name a few. The book is 359 pages long. Each devotion has 3-4 Bible verses associated with the topic you are viewing. Jesus Lives is a companion volume to Jesus Calling. The author wants to remind you that Jesus is always there.

I personally do not care for this style of writing. It is written as if Christ were talking to you personally. I would prefer to hear from the author. I was very uncomfortable with this as it seems to put words and thoughts out as if the Lord was thinking and saying them. To use this for my devotions I would probably only read the verses and spend my own time thinking about them and how they applied to my life. The style and format are nice. The length of the devotion is also good as it is something you could add to your own devotions without taking a lot of extra time. This is not a book I would recommend to others. This book was provided by Thomas Nelson Publishers for review and all opinions in this post are my own.

BOOKS BY PANSY

Hello,

Instead of a review of one book, in this post I am going to discuss a series of books. They were written by Isabella Alden under the pen name of Pansy in the late 1800's and early 1900's. She was a Pastor's wife and used real life situations to write her fiction books. Her books were written with the purpose to bring young and old closer to the Lord.

I found her books several years ago when they were re-printed by Living Books. The first title I read was Tip Lewis and His Lamp. They did approx. 10-12 and I really enjoyed them. Unfortunately their covers make them look like a Christian romance, but that is not true. Then I was able to find some of her books through e-bay, old copies and even some first printings. Through e-bay I was able to connect with a ministry that re-prints many of her books. That ministry is Keepers of the Faith. (www.keepersofthefaith.com). They also print many other wonderful books, but for this post I want to stick to the Pansy books. These books will encourage your children in their walk with the Lord and help them to see the need to take a stand for the Lord.

Pansy wrote books for varying ages and for both girls and boys. All of my six children love her books and they continue to read them over and over. We often read these books out loud together as a family. Some of our favorites have been Ester Ried, Julia Ried, Chrissy's Endeavor, Mrs. Solomon Smith, Tip Lewis and His Lamp, Three People, and I could go on and on.

Ester Ried has always been one of my favorites. Ester is a young lady who lives with her mother and siblings. They keep a boarding home. Ester and her mother are the only professing Christians in the family, and her mother is not very talkative about her faith. Ester is discontented and it shows to her family members. When she is invited to her wealthy cousin's wedding she jumps at the chance to go, and believes in her heart that her cousin has an easier time being a "good" Christian because of her circumstances. Needless to say Ester learns that her cousin has a close walk with the Lord and she does not have it easier than Ester. Try the book for yourself and see what Ester learns and find out what happens.

The King's Daughter is about Dell Bronson. As a young child when her mother dies she is taken into her Aunt and Uncles home and is raised by them as a dedicated Christian. She suddenly receives a letter from her father requesting her presence in his home. Her father runs a boarding house with a bar attached. See how it turns out when Dell returns home to take care of her father and joins the local Temperance Society.

Three People covers the lives of 3 young men who are born on the same day in different levels of Society. Tode is born to a drunkards family, Ben is born to a middle class family and his father runs the local drug store and sells some alcohol, and Pliny is the rich man's son who owns a hotel where alcohol is sold. See how their lives become intertwined and the final result of alcohol and it's influence in their lives.

Chrissy's Endeavor is about a young lady who goes away to visit a friend for the summer and she is invited to join the local CES. Read the book to find out what this stands for and the changes it brings to Chrissy's life. And there is a second book about Chrissy after she is married called Her Associate Members.

Another of my favorites was a short story called Clean Hands. A young lady goes out of town on her own for the first time to a relatives wedding. Before she leaves her pastor challenges her to keep her hands clean. Her gives her a book titled "Kept for the Master's Use" and marks some portions for her to read on the train. Get the book and find out what happens. I was so impressed with the story that I wanted to find the book the Pastor had given her, imagine my surprise when my husband brought home a copy in a bunch of old Christian books he purchased at a yard sale one weekend. The book Kept for the Master's Use was written by Francis Havergal who wrote several hymns that are found in our hymnals today. One of the most well known being Take My Life, the song on which her book was based. (Keepers has also re-printed this book.)

Please try to purchase some of these books. They will be one of the best investments you make in reading material for your children. I will later post a list of some of her other titles in my side bar. Keepers of the Faith does carry many of these books. I am not being paid or influenced to advertise their website, but they do carry much better reading material than your local Christian Bookstore. Their link is in my sidebar.

I hope you get a chance to read some of these books. If you already have, leave a comment about your favorite one. Thanks for reading this post. I look forward to sharing more books in the future.
PS Keepers of the Faith is presently having a sale on their books! And make sure to read their article regarding how they pick the books to re-print.

BOOK REVIEWS

I will be posting Christian book reviews on this blog. I will do reviews for some companies and then other posts on books we are reading as a family. There are some places I highly recommend to purchase books from and they are listed in my links. These are all ministries that we personally have purchased from, although we may not agree with everything they carry. The opinions on this blog are mine or a member of my family, not just some review copied from the back of a book. You do not have to agree with us, but this is our honest opinion. You may leave comments regarding the books reviewed, or on others you would like to know about.
